1000 Days Sober

1000 days sober
Alcohol used to be the biggest part of me. Today I am 1000 days, or 2.74 years sober. The cravings have mostly passed. Moving to a new city was hard at first, because I had a lot of fear that would have been neatly hidden away with a few shots of vodka. But time went on, and I relaxed into Cleveland, loving it more every day.

Kratom, cannabis and the occasional psychedelic still play a large role in my life. I never had a desire to be straightedge, and I would still drink if I thought I could stop at 1 or 2 (or even 3 or 4) drinks. But now when I think about drinking, it feels like drowning. If I can't enjoy my life sober, alcohol is never going to help.

My life is so calm now. I don't worry about money anymore. I get my work done without dragging my feet too much. I sleep as much as I want. It's pretty easy to maintain my weight. I remember everything. And when I go bowling or play poker with people who are drinking, I usually win!

I always include the caveat in these posts that I may drink again one day. Any time I say to Kelly, "I want a drink!" She says, "So have one then." I could have one. But it always helps to imagine the next 12 hours after that first drink. It's fun for two hours... then it's just sickness and regret.

I know alcohol doesn't have to equal sickness and regret, but that limiting belief helps me stay sober. It's easier to work with it than try to change it. I love alcohol too much. That total loss of control, the complete shutting down of my mind... it's delicious. But the consequences are just too high a price to pay.

So I am gradually learning how to shut down my mind on my own. And I guess I don't usually have much need to lose control. A lot of my sober time was spent mourning my wild fun self, but now my fun is just more subtle... I don't need parties and hard drugs to have fun. A little meditation and making my art is more fun than it ever used to be.

And that's the true reason why I stay sober, to make my art. I have things to say in my time here, and alcohol kept that stuff bottled up in me. I have books to write and videos to record and photos to take. I want to enjoy the creation as much as the creations.

I do wish my voice was bolder. But that's a wish I couldn't have had drunk. I wouldn't have had the awareness to know what my voice was. I want to express myself as fully as I can, and have as much fun doing it as possible. I want to transform my consciousness with my art. I want to quiet my mind with my art. I want to be wild and fun with my art. All the things alcohol did for me, I now substitute my art. This is my intention, my calling, and my savior. It's easier to keep my word now.

You’re in the right place at the right time. You’re doing everything right. It’s ok to relax, to let your stresses go, let your worries go. Right now, you don’t have to think about money. You don’t have to think about your health. You don’t have to think about what you’re doing tomorrow, or even later today. Right now you don’t have to think about anything.

Breathe in and be at peace with what is.
Breathe out and remember who you are.

You’re the creator! You are god in human form. Let this day be easy. Relax and step into your power.

This morning, when I was pre-paving my day, I decided that Nam Myoho Renge Kyo was going to be my mantra today, and I was going to expect miracles to result from chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. Two miracles happened that were minor but proved to me that chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo works! And remember: Nichiren Buddhism is about proving to yourself that the mantra Nam Myoho Renge Kyo works. It’s one of the few religions or philosophies that encourages you to seek proof of the practice so that you can keep delving deeper into it.

SO the first miracle: we went to a friend’s house—a friend that I don’t know too well. I didn’t know what to expect. I met his wife. I’ve never met his wife before. We started talking. We talked about spirituality and how I want to go to India. Eventually it came out that she works for someone who chants Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. I didn’t bring this up. I didn’t ask her if she chants. I didn’t ask if she knew anyone that chants. She just kind of out of the blue said, “Oh yeah this woman I work for, she’s Buddhist and I hear her chanting. Her husband asked, “What’s the chant again?” and she said Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.

That was the first miracle. I got goosebumps from it. The second miracle: We were at Chipotle eating dinner and afterwards we were going to see our other friend at this store. I had been chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo. We were finishing up our sofritas bowls, about to walk outside. Who do we see in line at Chipotle but the woman we were about to go see! Turned out she closed her shop early and we just ran into her magickally at Chipotle. It’s not really a small city we live in. How magickal is it that we ran into her even though our plan would have fallen through?!

Those are my two Nam Myoho Renge Kyo miracles today. I encourage you to try chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo today. Just intend to see miracles related to it.

Your mind is so powerful. It doesn’t really matter what you chant. You’ll see miracles as long as you’re not thinking and worrying. But Nam Myoho Renge Kyo is an established spiritual practice that you can use to prove to yourself that mental discipline or attention training really works!

Breathe in and let life be fun and full of miracles today!
Breathe out and celebrate how far you’ve come in this life!

You’ve barley scratched the surface of depth available to you. Let go of your worries and your doubts and decide that today you will see miracles.

Breathe in and open up to miracles!
Breathe out and celebrate who you are—god in human form, able to manifest anything you want. But more importantly, able to feel good the instant you choose to.

Breathe out and really be kind to yourself. You deserve kindness today. You more than anyone deserve to be treated with love by yourself. You deserve your own love. And when you give yourself love you’ll see it reflected from other people, but you gotta give yourself that love first!

Even though I have SO MANY reasons to hate myself, I love and accept myself exactly the way I am. Even though I have so much doubt, I love and accept myself exactly the way I am. Even though I hate being a hypochondriac, I still totally and completely love and accept and forgive myself. Even though I have been making mistakes with my words, I still totally and completely love and accept and forgive myself.

Just relax. Just relax. Everything is going to work out for you. Everything already is working out for you.

It can feel so thick and heavy and bad and scary. But have you tried just smiling? And letting those thoughts go? Only your thoughts can make you feel bad!

Breathe out and step away from those thoughts that make you feel bad. I’ve been overwhelmed with thoughts making me feel bad. Stressing myself out. Beating myself up. Worrying. Hating myself! We can turn that around right now.

You’re in the right place at the right time. You’re doing everything right. This is the main event. This moment is where it matters whether you feel good. This moment is where it matters what you do. In this moment you can choose to think thoughts that empower you. In this moment you can choose to feel better and when you feel better, you attract better-feeling circumstances.

Breathe out and trust the solution will come when it’s time.

It is all working out for you. Let yourself be still. There’s nothing you have to do. There’s nothing you have to change. Decide to love the parts of you you want to change. Make peace with them. Let yourself smile and get just a whiff, a hint of feeling better. Just a smile can start you in your upward spiral. It can start you up the emotional scale and before you know it, you’ll be feeling optimistic and you’ll wonder why you ever wanted to give up! Just trust it will come and for now be ok with the part of you that wants to give up. It’s part of the process. If you didn’t want to give up, it just wouldn’t matter as much when you succeed. You’ll be looking back when you succeed, thinking, “I wanted to give up so many times. It was hard! But it was so worth I!”
